His words stung, but Mara kept herself steady. "Just because you believe it's rubbish doesn't mean it is," she murmured. That was where she wanted to end it, to avoid any argument that he might take too far.

"Well... Yes, but..." He had her there. "It's too late now, anyway. I'm sorry." She sniffed. "We'll get you back now, and they can bandage it properly." Maybe she should get into the habit of carrying something to use as a bandage, in case. Not just because she might cause injuries, but to ensure she was always ready to help.

Mara dipped beneath his arm so she could anchor him, taking on his weight. "Okay. It won't take too long to get back. Walk with me." She began to walk, slowly, step by step, to make sure he wouldn't stumble.

Mara nodded. "I loved the market. Any market is wonderful, you see so many wonderful things. That people have grown, made, thought of themselves." She blushed, averting her eyes down. "I always spend a little too much at markets. I just want so many trinkets and to make sure nobody goes away with nothing."

Her family was hardly rich, but she felt they were in a better position than most.

"Either!" she declared, eyes glittering. "There's so much we could do. More than just giving things out so... simply. We could stuff potatoes with other vegetables or herbs. Potato dumplings sound so nice." Smiling, she looked back at Hilda. "I think we should do potato dumplings. As soon as we have cooking duty, we should do it!"

"We didn't really... grow much," Mara said carefully. "But my father, being a merchant, he came across all sorts we wouldn't usually eat much. My family mostly grew food that could grow quickly and feed our family, and others too, if they were short. But..." She didn't want to say that they were better off than most, but Utopia District hadn't had the issues with the slew of refugees. That had given them some benefit. Then, she had never been caught in the tide of politics.

"We should," she agreed. "There'll be ingredients to make bread. We'll have potatoes. There must be a few little scraps we can collect to help though. There's butter, isn't there? Not very much, but some... I think."

Mara gave him a bewildered look. What was the point of flowers? She knew he had his heart set on being a soldier, but she hadn't realised just how... out of nature he was. Were most cadets like that? She hoped not. There were plenty who came from the territories rather than a district, and she expected those from districts weren't quite as in tune with nature as she felt she was.

"There's no such thing as a magic cure-all," she answered. "There are pendants and amulets and mixtures, but nothing cures everything." If only. She had plenty of charms that helped her, but you couldn't just mash them together and then they all worked perfectly. "They're perfect because... well, they symbolise a lot of things. But especially remembrance. Like... remembering times that are good."

Namely, times when things weren't all infected with terror. Even if he was injured.

"They can help to stop bleeding as well, people say," she added, and eyed his wound. Something needed to be done about that. "But I think they're too pretty to pick. I know what to do." With her slightly bloodied jacket, she dropped to a knee and covered the wound with one side, wrapping around, and then used the sleeves to tie it. "That'll do. It might slip a little, but I think I have it wrapped high enough to keep over."

With a little grimace, Mara nodded in agreement. "Yeah. I wonder what happens when it gets really foggy. How many people hope, maybe this time, they've gone..." It was a horribly hopeful and depressing thought. She pulled herself out of the misery quickly, turning her attention to the drawing.

"I don't think I've ever had one. Oh. Maybe once." Thoughtful, she tilted her head to the side. "Maybe next time we're on kitchen duty we should try and make something really nice for everybody. Something different. We could go out and pick herbs or something," she suggested.

As Tobias spoke, Mara's eyes darted to him, and gave a sigh. Really, she didn't want to be right. Plunging into darkness, into danger, was terrifying. It made her heart hammer in her chest like somebody screaming to be released from a cage. Horror awaited them.

"Keep together," she breathed, eyes widening as she answered the question. Boom, boom, boom, went her heart. She couldn't face a Titan by herself. "Please. We... Together, we'll be able to help each other more quickly." Her desperate attempt at giving reason to her answer sounded pitiful, a meek voice escaping her mouth. They would be stronger together.

Hands shaking, she dipped into the pockets of her jackets, searching out tokens she had placed within the night before. It was a ritual, superstitious to the end. If anything happened, she needed good luck charms. The majority were hidden away beneath her mattress, but these would do. As the cold touch of stone and metal brushed her palm, she paused, gaze lingering on her teammates. They too would need luck.

"I..." she started, but failed. Her hand balled up, clutching the brooches and good luck charms within, and then extended her arm. Fingers unfolding, she revealed the collection of small trinkets. "Please. Take one," she urged them, words laced with anguish. "They're my good luck charms. We need every piece of luck with us now."

Of the nine in her palm, they were mostly nature-themed. Pieces of metal depicting a leaf, a rose, a wheat stalk, an apple. Dark stone drilled through. Three wooden creations: a sapling, another leaf, an acorn. Then, a twist of iron, like a knot of rope.

Mara, still downcast, nodded in understanding. She knew Axel well enough to know of his temper, and that he rarely took insults or challenges well. Hurting him in such a way, if it had been intentional, why wouldn't he retaliate? There were no reasons she could figure out that he'd have not to.

She hadn't realised they were still holding hands. When he let go, she blinked, and her cheeks burned. Oops.

Grabbing hold of his hand, the girl helped to haul him up, trying her best not to jerk him upwards in fear of splitting the wound even more, or doing any extra damage. Once he was up, she ducked under his arm, pushing her shoulder against his ribcage, and secured his arm around her neck. "How's that?"

Her eyes flicked to the ground, at the a cluster of petals next to the bush he'd fell into. "Hey. Look," she murmured, pointing with her little finger. "Those are forget-me-nots." Her gaze glazed, happy. Then her cheeks reddened, darker this time, as she whispered, "Those are perfect for today."

His playful tease elicited a smile from the girl. It shattered at the harsh words that followed her suggestion. Did he think so little of her? Her lower lip trembled. Then the tears she had been holding back slipped down her cheeks. Perhaps it were true. She was weak, and as small as he was, as light as he seemed, it would be difficult. If she dropped him, it wouldn't just be his ankle that hurt.

From height, or even landing improperly, it could kill him.

Her hair covered her face as she let out blubbering sobs. Once the gates had opened, the tears didn't want to stop. She was a quiet crier, but it felt loud in the silence of the forest.

Mara felt his hand pass over hers, clutching. The warmth settled her a little, but it was what he said she latched onto. Her fellow cadet's soft words soothed her fears, and she let herself drown sorrows to his voice. "Thank you," she whispered, still shielded by her hair. "I'm sorry, Axel. I... I didn't m-mean for you to get hurt." That much, she was sure, he knew, but she had to say it.

"We could... walk b-back together. I can s-support you?" Her questioning tone betrayed her anxiety of messing up once more.

"That might be a good idea," Mara murmured. She just really hoped to never see one. Utopia should be safe, she knew that. As much as she wanted to help people, she felt being terrified wouldn't be any help to anybody at all. But she had a while to think on it properly.

Grimacing at the thought, she nodded. "Or both. Weigh up whether they can kill it or if it would be better to run... or if there's no escape and the only thing they can do is attack it." The girl shuddered. "I wish they'd just all vanish..."

Mara nodded thoughtfully. "I suppose. You'd think the Garrison might have more experience with them... but who knows what's changed now?" Before the Fall of Wall Maria, Utopia had never had any Titans. But after, there had been whispered concerns they might get some, when the Titans managed to travel north enough. She couldn't imagine what it might be like for Trost District. She hadn't spent enough time to know, but she supposed she could ask people who lived there before they joined the cadets. Enough time must have passed for the monsters to reach Trost...

"I hope we never have to see one," she said, with a grimace at the thought. "It's horrible looking at pictures of them, for me. There's just so much... wrong with them. I don't think I'll ever nail what they're really like. I can't imagine what people who have seen one, or more than one!, think when they see them..."

To be met with a hug made her feel warm inside, pushing out the cold darkness that had crept in ever since they had first left the ground. It felt good, despite feeling the tremors of his body, and the Utopia native accepted his gratitude gallantly. "We'll be as safe as possible," she murmured in reply, reaching to offer a gentle squeeze to his hand. "I promise," Mara added, somewhat foolishly. Such a promise could not be kept, but it had to be given all the same. A great feeling of desperation for that safety overcame her, and she had to reassure both of them.

A hand touched her shoulder, and she managed a small smile at the words that followed. "We are," she agreed, gazing at Tobias with a hopeful roundness to her dark eyes. They were together, and had made it so far. That was better than anything. Others might have fallen far sooner.

As the group of them broke to attend to the survivor, Mara hung slightly back, though not by choice. Her ankle whined with its use, complaining with a steady, throbbing ache that she tried to bury. Axel would ignore it. She'd sliced his leg to the point of needing medical attention once, and still he had been strong, with blood dribbling from the wound. But he wasn't there now. She had to be as strong as he had been. No, stronger. There had been no Titans then.

Listening to the exchange, she gulped her worries down into her fluttering stomach. Six, to one. Terrible. No. Terror. This was worse than any simulation they'd had to consider, a nightmare that, for her, made Shiganshina's tales pale in significance. Because it was her home this time. She knew these streets better than most, could call out places she'd been, where people she knew lived. Walls, she hoped they'd gotten out safely.

A black flare. Her eyes, already round, widened. "They'll need us," she whispered, not daring to speak louder. For those were not the words she wanted to come out. Couldn't they wait, look for another sign? Something less horrifying. "If there's an abnormal, they'll use more supplies than usual, most likely. If it's... too difficult. More people might be there as well. That's more supplies needing to be given. There's a good chance that they've taken it down by now, isn't there?" She barely paused after her question, quickly looking around her squadmates. "If we don't get to them quick enough, they could run out of supplies when facing another. We must go there."

A dark edge of distress filled her emphasis, her knuckles white as her fingers curled deep into her palms, creased as they pushed into her hand grips. She hoped they at least felt the same pull. A hopelessness, a need to try and help them all. But, more secretly, Mara hoped they felt the same fear. Perhaps the abnormal was still about.

Worse... perhaps they'd need to fend it off, to help others.

Mara blinked at Hilda's confession, unsure of what to make of it. And then she smiled, calm. "Perhaps one day we'll find out, and I'm sure you'll be the first to tell me," she said optimistically, a brightness to her warm brown gaze. "It's a difficult subject, and that you find it interesting is... helpful, isn't it?" A troubled frown creased her forehead. They needed people to find interest in it, to drive them to want to look into it further. That would help them, after all. The more they knew, the better they could fight against them.

Though she would much rather find better ways of healing people.

"Mint and parsley," she said, wistfully staring into the distance. "Basil and rosemary, though thyme was my favourite. Mostly potatoes though, mother thought ours were the best in the whole district. Sometimes we could sell them, if we had a little too many. I think they'll sell some more this year, because Adrian and I can't eat them now." She felt a pang in her stomach, and wondered if it were hunger or upset. She did miss those potatoes, though they had been small and weirdly shaped, probably because of the cramped space.

Smiling at her friend, Mara nodded in agreement. "I would much prefer to pick berries than do all the hand-to-hand combat. So maybe one day, when everything is more out in bloom here? I don't know." She really hoped that would be soon. "I like battlefield medicine the most. It's horrible to think about, but it's kind of calming. What do you prefer?"

14
Her smile grew. "They say it's good to have both, but... if we didn't have some people smarter than they're stronger, and then stronger than they're smarter, well..." Mara shrugged. "We probably wouldn't be able to fight the Titans as efficiently?" It made sense to her. Everybody had their strengths. They needed people who could work out new things to help the stronger people fight. That was how construction was like, wasn't it? Somebody made the plans, other people built the building.

At his words, her cheeks reddened to a blush. "It's okay. Maybe it'll help some people. Models can be good for visualisation... get some sticks and maybe we'd be able to make a little structure of the Walls? They probably already do that though. To plan things, I mean. Don't you think?"

Mara's mouth watered at the description. It wasn't even that much, but it was something to cling onto, and it made her feel hungry. The meals weren't terrible as a cadet, but it definitely made her miss all the food in Utopia. "That sounds really nice," she murmured, daydreaming in the distance.

At the question, she blinked and tilted her head. "Not really, we lived - we live right in the middle of a bunch of houses. Sometimes we grew some food but nothing like that." She wished they had, but living near the gate meant there wasn't much grass around. "I wish we did though, I love trees. And I love picking fruit. I hope we get to do that sometimes here. Don't you?"
