Messages - Mara Sonnenschein

"Perhaps we'll have the chance to visit it?" she said hopefully. She would very much like that. Simply visiting the market was something to lift her spirits. And she would get to meet all sorts of new people as well. "He's more of a traveller - he'd set up a stall here and there, but he often stops by villages or businesses."

Tilting her head, Mara thought about it. "We could try, yeah! They might like that. It's, um... initiative, right?" She smiled. "I think we should definitely give it a try."

Mara stared at him. She felt bad for him, terrible and even horrified that that was his way of thinking. It was nearly beyond her comprehension, and she had to stop herself from stepping forwards and hugging him. He didn't seem like the sort who would like that very much. "But weaknesses make us... us," she murmured. "That's not living, if you're not looking for anything but survival." Didn't he have any friends? She wanted to ask, but she thought that would be far too rude.

Packing up, she bit her lip and tried not to bother him any more. His parting comment hurt her. "You helped tons," she called after him, but didn't follow. Maybe he needed some time. Hopefully she could make it up to him sometime though!

"N-no?" she frowned, confused. Was fighting essential? "Survival is... and I suppose some fight for survival, of course, but there must be other ways around as well. Right? We might have to fight to survive sometimes but there should always be more options to choose from." Peace was an option, but she knew that saying such a thing would likely only result in her being laughed at. As silly as it was, well, she would much rather live in a place that put peace above all else.

Mara's eyes widened as she realised that he wasn't answering her question directly. Perhaps I have. "Of course it does! You shouldn't have to, you shouldn't need to do anything like that. None of us should." She lowered the gun, and stepped back slightly from him. "Don't you care about living? Not just surviving. Surviving is, I don't know, the base goal of everybody. But you have to have some other idea of what you'll do with life!"

"Well... you'd call for the Garrison or the Military Police, wouldn't you?" she frowned. "And hand-to-hand combat can get you somewhere. Would you really... shoot somebody? Or stab them?" The thought terrified her. Being attacked was bad enough, but to almost kill somebody, even in defence, was horrifying. If such things happened, she had to think there was another way than taking somebody's life, or hurting them so badly they might wish for it.

Watching as he reloaded, Mara tried to mimic his actions, but ended up taking even longer. "I'm trying. I am," she murmured. "So... are you going for the Garrison? Or are you more for the Military Police or Survey Corps?"

Mara frowned at him, unsure exactly what he meant. "I don't mean to question you," she said hesitantly, "but it's not good to think everything is opposing us either, I think. Fighting one another isn't going to help us fight the Titans, is it?" She couldn't understand it even when cadets argued and fought each other, usually over small things... weren't there bigger problems to consider? Why couldn't they push past it and keep training?

She shuddered at the second shot. As he said to try again, Mara reluctantly brought the rifle up and aimed at her target, staring at it as she listened to him speak. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself and fired. The shot when wide, to the right, and she grimaced. "I suppose that makes sense," she murmured finally, lowering the rifle as she reloaded it, fingers clumsy and slow. "I guess I just don't really like thinking about that? I don't know. It... makes my stomach go weird."

Mara gazed at him as he spoke, preferring the more relaxed - could he be relaxed? - way he communicated with her this time. His words piqued her curiosity, and she barely managed to keep her mouth shut in order to listen. "You know an awful lot about fighting," she said quietly, as he turned to pick up his own weapon. He acted with such precision. His shot made her jump.

"It can't be that bad, can it? To need to train with any weapon... especially against other humans. Aren't Titans the enemy here?" she burst out, her confusion clear. She wasn't entirely oblivious, of course, but she was too optimistic for her own good. Of course there were bad people, she knew that, but the way he spoke of it suggested that it was terribly common. Like it was as constant a threat as the monsters that preyed outside of the Walls.

Relieved for the help in reloading, Mara listened closely to his words. "Okay," she said, trying to be her usual optimistic self about it.

Aiming the rifle again, she let him adjust her, correcting her hands and ensuring she was better positioned to fire well and true. She sucked in her breath, trying not to be distracted by him holding her in place, the feeling of sudden entrapment. The gun, him, and her. She had to do this. If she was going to become a member of the Garrison, she had to get used to guns, or else she'd be no use to them. That was what Axel would say.

She fired and flinched back, stepping on his foot by accident. "I did it, right?" she asked without looking. The shot had hit the very edge of the target, but hit all the same. "I need to do this, I need to be able to handle guns... I won't even have to use them all that much. Right?" She paused before asking, more quietly, "If I can't use it even on a target, would they have much use for me in the Garrison?"

Mara sniffed, not knowing what to say to that. "I don't know... would they really stop me from graduating?" How was she meant to do any good if she couldn't even graduate? All because of firearms, things she might not even use!

She bent her knees a little at his command, feeling odd in the way she pressed the gun against her. "Won't this hurt when it fires?" she asked. It was difficult to calm herself, let alone to stop thinking about it even a little bit. Mara took a deep breath, and swung the rifle to the left. She squeezed the trigger.

The jolt almost made her stumble in surprise, and the sound made her wince as well. Her eyes closed, pinched shut, she didn't see where the bullet landed. Instead of hitting the target, it went too far left, and splintered a chunk of tree stump.

Mara blinked at him, still unsure, but she didn't have much of a choice either. If she lagged behind too much, the consequences were all too severe. "Okay," she said reluctantly, and looking down at her gun.

Taking a breath, she lifted the rifle and placed it so it dug into her shoulder. It wasn't quite right, at an angle, and she struggled to breathe slowly - taking a few rapid breaths, holding it in, and then cycling over. Her hands trembled. "I don't think I can do this," she admitted.

"W-what?" she stammered, not knowing if she had heard him properly. Her eyes widened, and Mara stared at him in shock. "I-- sorry, what did you say?" she asked. Maybe it had been a mistake to approach him. She didn't move, instead her eyebrows pinching into a frown. The bluntness of his words had surprised her, and reminded her of some of the other more abrupt cadets in the corps. Sometimes they were helpful, but there was a way they spoke that made her not want to ask them. "What does everyone else notice..?"

Mara winced as the shot rang out, her eyes closing until she heard him reloading. The silence worried her, and she was about to turn away to ask somebody else when he spoke. "I was wondering if maybe you could help me?" she asked hesitantly, her brown eyes fixed on him rather than the gun. "I'm not really very... confident with these," she said, reluctantly lifting the gun in her hands. "I know we've been training with them for some time, to learn their parts, but I still don't get them. They're, well..." She didn't want to admit it, he seemed so confident with the firearm.

[ march 846 ]

Ballistics and firearms - her least favoured part of training. Firearms especially. They were so cold. Brutal things, not meant for her dainty eyes. Every gun she so much as saw terrified her. Blades were bad enough, but they could be held so easily, there was a grace to them. Firearms were ugly, sudden things with loud noises and too much pain behind them. They weren't all that effective against Titans either. But quite simply, it was scary.

Their task for the day was shooting practice. While others headed off to the targets, Mara stood, frozen, unsure of what to do. There was no backing out - she had to train just as others did. Some of her friends had already moved on. She even saw Axel head off, intent on perfecting things as he always did. Not likely to help her much. If at all.

She turned, instead, to the person closest to her. A boy she wasn't certain of, but had heard his name. "Um, excuse me? Voltaire?" the brunette said quietly, shuffling a foot forwards.

She nodded. "The market is my favourite place to go. In Utopia, I knew most of the merchants, or they knew me, because of my father." Mara could remember some of them, the nicest, shining smiles to her and inviting her over. Getting some of the produce for free, just a little bit, as thanks for her parents helping them with something. She missed it so much.

"We can do this," she smiled at her. "I hope we get kitchen duty soon. It'll be nice." A treat for everybody, something different.

His words stung, but Mara kept herself steady. "Just because you believe it's rubbish doesn't mean it is," she murmured. That was where she wanted to end it, to avoid any argument that he might take too far.

"Well... Yes, but..." He had her there. "It's too late now, anyway. I'm sorry." She sniffed. "We'll get you back now, and they can bandage it properly." Maybe she should get into the habit of carrying something to use as a bandage, in case. Not just because she might cause injuries, but to ensure she was always ready to help.

Mara dipped beneath his arm so she could anchor him, taking on his weight. "Okay. It won't take too long to get back. Walk with me." She began to walk, slowly, step by step, to make sure he wouldn't stumble.

Mara nodded. "I loved the market. Any market is wonderful, you see so many wonderful things. That people have grown, made, thought of themselves." She blushed, averting her eyes down. "I always spend a little too much at markets. I just want so many trinkets and to make sure nobody goes away with nothing."

Her family was hardly rich, but she felt they were in a better position than most.

"Either!" she declared, eyes glittering. "There's so much we could do. More than just giving things out so... simply. We could stuff potatoes with other vegetables or herbs. Potato dumplings sound so nice." Smiling, she looked back at Hilda. "I think we should do potato dumplings. As soon as we have cooking duty, we should do it!"
