...“I will see you,” he said as he flicked the two chips he was playing with into the center of the table. One man visibly relaxed. “And I will raise you.” Izak put another six chips in the table and finished his drink. Two players pushed their chairs out, two others continued. The hand continued for another half an hour, Izak had two doubles of whiskey and came away richer than he expected. He had a room across the street though, so he was in no real hurry to leave. He pocketed his winnings, paid his tab, and chose to spend the rest of the time before they close enjoying his drink in an empty bar with his feet up on a table. The life of a privateer may just suit him yet. The money was good, the hours were good, and he did not have to deal the daily task of being an officer.

As he strolled out of the bar at closing time however, that feeling disappeared very quickly. He glanced to his left, seeing a familiar blonde, and kept walking across the street.

“Go to hell Turner,” he bellowed in the dark of the morning.

Plotters / Casting Call for Camp Crashing!!
« on: July 12, 2018, 12:15:00 AM »
Hi Everyone!

Recently we have begun posting in one of my older Erwin/Survey Corps Threads Camp Crashing! The brief summary is below.

Camp Crashing – Erwin hears that there are a large number of cadets looking to join the Survey Corps. Out of a mix of surprise and disbelief, he sets out with several of those under his command to see the recruits for himself.

In a sense, I'd like to think of this as an attempt for Erwin and those with him to get a tour of the training grounds and see the cadets in training pre-internship! I know a few of you have already expressed interest, but if you have a training Corps Officer/Instructor or a Cadet that you would want to have join in, please let me know, and I will tag you in Discord after the next Erwin post so we can get you in.

Pleas reply here with what characters you want to have join in, no limits on how many, I just want to know the who's who since I lost my earlier list!

Training Corps Barracks & Grounds / Camp Crashing
« on: March 22, 2018, 07:59:29 PM »
The cool breeze swept by the edges of Erwin’s hood as he and the few members of the Survey Corps he was with approached the training grounds. Fall was setting in, and Erwin had business to tend to.  For some reason, there were an overwhelming number of cadets willing to join the Survey Corps. While some would see this as a boon for the green commander, he was rather skeptical. He had to be. The politics of his position demanded he be.

As Levi would put it, something was “Off” about the whole situation. To that end, Erwin thought this was some form of political ploy. It had to be. Unless…unless someone had ambition…the kind of ambition he was looking for. At least he hoped it was that, and not stupidity.

The wind picked up again and Erwin looked towards the sky. A storm was moving in. It was time to pick up the pace. Pushing his horse to go faster, he said “Let’s move, and stay close. The camps not far ahead.”

‹ WHEN ›

Date - 845 - Three weeks after the Fall of Wall Maria

Village of Winrose - Within Wall Maria

Survey Corps

It has been three weeks since the Fall of Wall Maria...

The refugees continue to pour into Wall Rose, nearly unabated. Through it all, the handful of patrols the Garrison has sent out have returned with even more.

However, there are still those who have yet to flee, trapped by the oncoming onslaught of Titans in their own villages.

This is where the Scouts come in. The "Titan Killers" are the only ones capable of taking on titans outside the walls, and as such, are called upon to save as many lives as possible.

Stohess District / Clean Sweep
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:41:30 AM »
The rain rattled against the window as Erwin stared out into the streets of Stohess.  Turning back to his father’s old notebook and his own charts and research on his desk, he reviewed the notes again, and compared them with some of his own findings.  His progress had been slow as of late…with Shadis gone and his promotion he had much less time to dedicate towards his research, and even more responsibility.  In training, one of his instructors referred to the Survey Corps as “humanity’s most well-armed misfits”.  Over the past fifteen years of service, he fully understood what he had meant.  The Survey Corps’ members were indeed just that.  While the Military Police search for the best and brightest with each group of trainees, the Survey Corps would take in soldiers of all sorts.  From titan killers to those with wanderlust and those with odd habits or ceaseless courage, his unit could not have had a more diverse array of members.  His unit also could not have had better coordination, teamwork, and trust with one another.  Despite the reputation of the Survey Corps, they truly were humanities finest.  However, there were very few individuals that would say that to an MP.

As he sat slowly reviewing his father’s notes, he was interrupted with a knock on his door.  Opening a drawer and sliding the notebook inside, he said, “Enter.”

A soldier entered.  “Sir, there’s a squad of MPs coming down the street…another one of their surprise ‘inspections’,” she said.

Erwin stood from his chair.  “Well, this should get interesting.  Is Captain Levi on another one of his cleaning spells?”

“Yes, sir.”

Erwin smirked.  This will get interesting indeed, he thought.  “Follow,” he said, as they exited his office.

Survey Corps / Survey Corp Group RP Plotter
« on: July 24, 2017, 04:49:12 AM »
Okay everyone, here is the official list of group RP Ideas for the Survey Corps! (This is based on the vibe I got via discord discussions).

To show your interest, please respond and rank each of the following options on a 1 through 5 scale to show your interest. The scale being: 1 - Cool, but we can do that almost any time, 3 - I really like this one! But its not my top choice, and 5 - Yes!!! Let's get this started right now!!!

The idea with the highest number of points will be our first RP! The poll will be open until next Monday night at 11:59 PM US EST. After which I will tally the results and we will begin a thorough plotting and posting!

Here are the options:

A. Exit Shadis
The journey back to headquarters after the failure of Commander Shadis' final scouting mission.

B. Enter Smith
Wall Maria has fallen, and Shadis has left the Survey Corps to become a drill instructor for the next round of recruits.  Erwin is promoted to Commander, and addresses his troops during this period of desperation and disarray.

C. Hange's Lecture
What else would a mad sceintist do when not experimenting? Lecture lead by Hange educating Survey Corps members on her latest research on titans (complete with teacher's pets and hecklers).

D. Scouting Expeditions
The bread and butter of the Survey Corp's missions.
(We have "several" to do before the Battle of Trost and Eren's Trial)

E. HQ Shenanigans and Daily Life
The day-to-day of humanities most well-armed (and trained) misfits.  This is something we can improvise.  It may be group training sessions, daily life in the barracks (pranks, hanging out, cleaning, etc.) or something totally different!
(We can really improvise here)

Survey Corps / Erwin Smith
« on: June 30, 2017, 01:37:31 AM »

NAME: Erwin Smith
NICKNAMES (IF ANY):  Eyebrows (As a Child)
DATE OF BIRTH AND AGE (AS OF YEAR 845): October 14th, Year 808; Age 37.
PLACE OF BIRTH: A village within Wall Rose
MEMBER GROUP:  Survey Corps
FACE CLAIM: Himself

Standing at 6’2” (188) and weighing just over 200 pounds (92 kg) Erwin stands out, and over, among many of his subordinates. He is the epitome of a model officer, his uniform is always clean and in perfect order; he keeps himself in peak physical form; he is always clean shaven; and keeps his blonde hair parted to the left. Despite his square and well-defined facial features, two always stand out: his icy blue eyes and his bushy, blonde eyebrows.

Along with his commanding appearance comes a commanding presence. His abilities as a soldier and officer are only matched by stoicism and his humility. Furthermore, his serious behavior and stern facial expression often leads people to think that he is cold and grim.

Erwin is complex.  He is serious, self-assured, pragmatic, perceptive, and always planning far for the future.  Furthermore, he is what could be called a “strong and silent type”, and doesn’t speak more than is necessary; whether he is calling someone out, or speaking to a crowd to stir up support.  As such, he has a stoic charisma that draws people to him.  Despite this he does have a softer side and has a deep concern for his subordinates. But underneath this exterior is a man who is riddled by self-doubt, guilt and many regrets.  Perhaps this, or something darker, drives his almost single-minded determination to defend humanity.

It is interesting to note however, that he seems to sit somewhere between his two immediate subordinates, Levi Ackerman and Hange Zoë.  Where Levi is rude, anti-social, and aggressive, Erwin is polite, direct, and calm.  Where Hange is loud, outgoing, and impulsive, Erwin is quiet, introverted, and patient.

Charismatic – Erwin has a level of charisma that stands out among his fellow Survey Corps Officers.  Intelligent, well-educated and an eloquent speaker, he is able to sway almost anyone to see his point of view.  People are simply drawn to him as a leader.

This also includes his troops.  In battle, he has a inspiring presence that commands the same respect as Dot Pixis, if not Darius Zackly.  The men and women of the Survey Corps would follow him through the gates of hell, and are willing to sacrifice their lives to defend all of humanity at his order, not matter the cost.

Perceptive – Perhaps it has been his years of living knowing the secrets his father uncovered, perhaps it is his training?  Maybe it’s just who he is?  Erwin is very perceptive - he can see through almost anyone and is always two steps ahead of those who may pursue him.

Courageous – Erwin shows no fear or hesitation in completing any mission or dealing with any threat.  Furthermore, he never hesitates to lead any operation from the front and is always calm and collected in combat.

Master Tactician and Strategist – Since he was a child, the world has been a chess game to him.  Every operation the Survey Corps undertakes, every move he makes in an effort to prove his father’s theories is well-thought out.  He analyzes every potential variable and plans taking into consideration every tool or advantage he has at his disposal.  He considers all possible outcomes and the potential lives lost.  But he never makes his move until he is sure of the “success” of his decision.

Grim – To say that Erwin can be less than sunny is an understatement.  He is dark, serious, and brooding.  While there have been a select few people to see his “softer side”, it is only slightly less dark then he is regularly.  He also seems to understand that he may die to complete his goals, and perhaps embraces it.

When added to his pragmatic style of leadership, he comes off as cold and harsh.

Secretive – Erwin keeps to himself.  He does not often talk about himself, his life, or even his personal objectives with anyone.  Considering that death could take him at any time, be it by the jaws of a titan or the hand of a human, this is understandable.  However, it does make it very hard to build a relationship of trust with anyone outside of his fellow officers and his subordinates.

Fixated – While it doesn’t cloud his vision on the field of battle, Erwin is almost single-mindedly focused on proving his father’s theories about humanity correct.  Proving the theories correct is what drives him, and is the goal of whatever his grand strategy is in his head.  Serving in the Survey Corps, and now being its commander, simply is a cover.  Defending humanity is just sensible to him based upon this.

Self-scrutinizing – While Erwin certainly presents a cool, calm, and collected exterior, he is riddled with self-doubt, and constantly questions every step he takes in an effort to prove his father’s theory correct.  He seldom ever lets anyone know about this hell in his own mind.

To prove his father’s theory correct – that the memories of those inside the walls had been wiped or altered over a century ago.
To save humanity from the titans and make them the dominant species on Earth once more.
To restore the reputation of the Survey Corps.

Dying without proving his father’s theory correct.
Failing to stop the titans and save humanity.
Failing his troops in battle.

Born on October 14th in the year 808, Erwin Smith was born to Albrecht and Lucinda Smith in a small town deep within the territory of Wall Rose.  His father was the town's teacher, and made a modest living.  His mother ran a stall in the local market, selling a manner of dry goods.  However, that changed soon after Erwin was born.  At a month old, his mother passed away after collapsing in the marketplace unexpectedly.  The local doctor said it may have been the result of a heart condition, a recessive trait that was not passed on to Erwin.

Now a single father, Mr. Smith did the best he could to raise his son and with the help of some of his closest friends.  The saying "It takes a village to raise a child" certainly held true for Erwin's life.  From the neighbors who would bring him over for lunch to the librarian who would let him stay after hours to the kid who called him "Eyebrow" (which stuck), he was one of the most well-looked after people in his hometown.  Always curious and asking questions, he was an avid learner, fascinated by geography, history, and science, he was ever more curious about the world around him, and the world outside the walls.  He was brilliant, much like his father.  However, there was one question that he asked his father that changed the course of his life permanently.

In the year 822, some weeks before his fourteenth birthday, Erwin was in class with his father, and during a lesson on the history of humanity, he asked a question that his father could not genuinely answer – “What do we know about life before humanity moved inside the walls?”

Later that evening, his father secretly shared with him a heretical theory: all knowledge of the outside world was declared taboo 107 years prior, but even that would not have prevented the first generation from telling their children stories, as humanity had lived behind the wall for several generations. He had concluded that the first generation's memories had been altered, allowing the monarchy to control them better.  How, he did not know.  His proof was the litany of contradictions in the official history texts provided by the government to the schools throughout the walls.

Erwin was amazed by what he had heard.  And it filled him with more questions.  Were there more humans beyond the walls?  What the lands beyond the walls lead to?  Could humanity move beyond the walls and rebuild?  Would there even be a need to?  Innocent of the danger, Erwin shared this theory with other children that he knew, starting discussions of awe.  What happened next was something that he had not even noticed - until it was too late.

Two weeks after his birthday, his father left for the next town over to pick up several texts he required for the lessons he would begin teaching after the coming holiday.  Soon after his father left, he was approached in the marketplace by two members of the Military Police's First Interior Squad, who inquired about his father's theories.  After chatting for but a few moments, they left.  His father did not return home.  Albrecht Smith was killed in an accident in the town he left for earlier that day.  As the town mourned the loss of his father and one of its most upstanding citizens, Erwin began piecing the evidence together.  Though it was circumstantial at best, he had no doubts in his mind that his father had been murdered for getting too close to the truth. From then on, he devoted his life to proving his father's theories true.  However, there was little more he could do.

Soon after the family came by to help Erwin pack up his things, but not before he was able to go through all of his father's work.  He discovered a red leather, clasped notebook that his father kept in a false panel in his desk.  Within its pages was all of his research.  Oddly enough the First Interior Squad didn't come looking for it, perhaps assuming Albrecht's theory died with him.  Collecting whatever else he could discern as useful, he cautiously folded up what papers he could and slipped them in between the pages.  A week later, he left and moved to Utopia District, with his Uncle William and Aunt Alice and their five children.  There he finished his schooling, while spending many nights at the closest library, following up on his father's research.  Once again, the "Eyebrow" nickname came and stuck.

At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the military and left for training.  As dedicated to his training here as he was to his education, Erwin excelled overall as a student, but particularly in the area of military strategy.  Simply put, he had great leadership potential.  While in training, he became friends with Nile Dok and the two decided to join the Survey Corps together.  However, some close friendships are not meant to last.  During their training, the two men met a beautiful young woman by the name of Marie.  Immediately taken by the nature and grace of Erwin, it was surprising when he turned her away.  His future was already taken after all.  The night before their graduation ceremony was even more so.  Erwin and Nile, ranked third and fourth in their class, had literally every option open to them, but to Erwin's knowledge, their minds were made up.  That was until Nile spoke with him in the dining hall before the ceremony, and revealed he was going to propose to Marie, to which Erwin congratulated him.  Nile then revealed that he was joining the Military Police to stay closer to Maria and build a life within the walls that he could truly be proud of.  The ensuing argument ended with Erwin throwing a punch, and several other cadets pulling apart the two men.  Erwin could not believe what he had heard.  Feeling betrayed by one of the remaining friends he had, he signed on to the Survey Corps the following evening.  This was where he planned on spending the rest of his life, all in an effort to find further evidence to support his father's theory.

Over the next fifteen years, he would fight in several battles alongside many skilled men and women, including Michel Zacharias and Hange Zoë.  However, many were not as lucky to survive as those three, as the death toll for the Survey Corps was exceedingly high.  Michel became one of Erwin’s most trusted subordinates after he became a squad leader and the two fought together on numerous occasions.  Hange Zoë, another squad leader, joined the Corps several years after Erwin and Michel.  Erwin saw her as zealous and impulsive, and was surprised as anyone by her “transformation” from “titan killer” to “mad scientist”.  While they had a competitive relationship at times, they had mutual respect for one another.

One man however, stood out.  Survey Corps commander Keith Shadis.  Already a senior member of the Corps when Erwin joined, he became Commander in 838, and would serve for seven years.  During this time, the Survey Corps death toll skyrocketed.  Multiple missions were deemed failures.  The leadership behind the walls began to see the Survey Corps as a waste of valuable tax income and other resources.   Erwin pursued two courses of action to alleviate this situation.  First, he developed and proposed the Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation, which was rejected by Shadis outright, but was told to “Try that when you’re the Commander”.  The second took over two years of forging new connections and playing politics.  A the end of the year 844, Erwin arrived at Shadis’ desk to tell him that he had ensured that the funding for the Survey Corps would not be cut.  Shadis was surprised, but also terrified, by his political ability.

It was a few weeks later, early in 845, that he would meet a swordsman whose skill fascinated him.  Erwin and his squad, including Michel, were called into the Underground by the local Military Police squad to deal with a trio of thugs who had acquired, and were skilled users of Vertical Maneuvering Equipment.  So skilled in fact, that the Military Police had to call in “Titan Killers” to catch them.  The ensuing battle ended with a face-off with the leader of the three, Levi, and their arrest.  Rather than send them to the Military Police however, Erwin pulled the three into the Survey Corps, just in time for the next mission.

This fateful mission would prove to be the first test of Erwin’s formation, one that saved some lives, though not as many as he’d hoped, and an attempt on his life by Levi.  However, it was a futile one at best, as Erwin was already a step ahead of Levi, and had sent off  the documents that he was to acquire, and was carrying a duplicate with falsified information.  With Levi’s friends killed and his mission a failure, Erwin asked Levi if would stay in the Survey Corps, and the two reached an understanding and returned back to the walls.  Wall Maria fell soon after, and Shadis left the Survey Corps to the Command of Erwin.
