Training Corps Barracks & Grounds / Re: Wandering nostalgia. [Hilda]

“We don’t grow plums either, but sometimes they had them at the market in town.” Hilda stretched out. She could still picture the market, and the plums sold there- both red and black. She preferred the black plums- the red ones were a little too tart for her taste, though right now she’d take even a red one.

“So, are you thinking bread and potatoes separately, or potato bread?”
she asked. It sounded like separately, but she wanted to make sure. “Or maybe we could make potato dumplings...” If they had the ingredients for bread, and they had potatoes, then they could probably make potato dumplings.

“Do plums grow in Utopia?” Hilda asked. They weren’t particularly abundant in Krolva, but there were enough for her to have eaten some, though not very often- a rare, special treat.

She sat up straighter at Mara’s suggestion. “That’s a good idea! What do you think we should make? Hm...” she paused. “Maybe we should see what ingredients we’d have before deciding on that...”

“I think everybody wishes that.” Hilda said wistfully. “Like, the way they do when they die, just turning into steam and evaporating, so we’d know they were dead and gone for good.” She sighed, knowing they wouldn’t be lucky enough for the Titans to all suddenly die at once.

Pushing the thought of Titans away, she turned the page of her book then, glancing down at a drawing of a plum. “It’s been a long while since I’ve had a plum. Even a drawing of one looks good right now.”

“Maybe, I guess some of them have had to deal with Titans recently. Maybe I’ll ask about who actually studies Titans in class.” Hilda frowned. It seemed that everything had changed in these past months. She knew she was luckier than others- she hadn’t lost her home or her family like so many from Wall Maria. But here she was, which was a huge change in and of itself. Now it felt like nowhere was safe- that colossal Titan could strike Wall Rose at any moment. Now joining the Garrison or even the Military Police was no guarantee that you’d never face a Titan.

“I’d imagine seeing a Titan in real life, most people are going to either think how can they can escape from it, or how they’re going to kill it.”
she said with a rueful smile, releasing the ends of her hair from her fingers. Her natural instinct would probably be to flee rather than fight, but now that she was conscripted, fleeing probably wasn’t going to be an option for her.

Hilda supposed it would be a difficult subject to study in the real world, as part of work, to try and figure out all the whys and hows of Titans, but as far as classes in training went, it was actually one of the easiest subjects for her, partly because she found it so engaging.

"I'm not sure if I'd actually be going into that kind of work since I'm leaning towards the Garrison. I'd guess the Survey Corps would handle that since they're the ones who are more proactive with Titans and all."
Hilda said, twisting the ends of her hair between her forefinger and thumb. "Reading about them is fascinating, but... I don't know how I'd handle it if I saw one in real life!" She shuddered at the thought of it.

“That sounds really nice.” Hilda murmured. “I love the smell of fresh basil.” She bit her lip when Mara guessed that her family would be selling more potatoes in her and her brother’s absence, not quite sure what to say. Being away from home, wondering what everyone did while she was gone felt strange and sad, and she wondered if it was the same for Mara.

“I guess my favorite is Titan lore and anatomy, especially the lore.”
she answered. “I mean, Titans are terrifying to think about, but they’re such a mystery that it’s interesting to know more about them and try to figure out just where they came from and why their habits are what they are.”

"What did you grow?" she asked, curious. She was guessing vegetables and herbs. That's mostly what grew in the small garden out in the backyard at home. "Picking fruit sounds a lot better than most of the stuff we're doing here." she said with a wry smile. "I guess we might get to do that in survival skills classes."

All this talk of food was hunger-inducing, and dinner wasn't for another couple of hours, so she decided to change the topic. "So, which class do you like best so far?" she asked.

Hilda wasn’t so sure it was fine, but she didn’t argue the point. She just kept on pacing back and forth, trying to distract herself with other thoughts, thoughts that kept inevitably turning to the fact that Utopia was overrun with Titans, which turned into thoughts about how much worse the situation could get. So she ran over the possibilities of who was doing this and how and why- her mind was going to keep coming back to this, but trying to figure it all out was a lot less nerve-wracking than thinking about the outcome of this, and if there was anything to catch Hilda’s attention it was an unanswered question. She was so preoccupied with her thoughts that she nearly jumped when she heard the sound of her name.

“Uh, yeah, sure.” she nodded at Nack’s suggestion that she keep an ear out. Presumably for the person- or worse, people- responsible for this. She wasn’t so sure that just one person did this. With her blades ready in case someone burst out at her, she listened carefully for any strange noises that might indicate someone had gotten in or was already here and lurking nearby. The latter possibility in particular made her skin crawl. It would be terrible either way, but the thought that someone had been watching and waiting to strike the entire time was especially creepy. She shook that thought off, as it wasn’t a good idea to keep dwelling on worst case scenarios like that, especially when she was supposed to be listening out for any potential intruders.

Her ears were open, but all she heard was Farran and Nack working on the brake, until finally, the damaged gear was removed. She sheathed her blades as Farran spoke to her. “I-I  guess you could say that.” she stuttered, moving over near where he was standing. It made her incredibly nervous.  So many lives were partly in her hands. It was incredibly daunting, and made her stomach feel a little queasy just thinking about it. She looked over at the gear, before her eyes darted back to Farran, waiting for the go-ahead to get started.

"Mostly pies and tarts, sometimes she'd use the preserves in thumbprint cookies." Hilda answered, stretching her legs a little. "I always liked getting to help make the thumbprint cookies." What she wouldn't give for one of those cookies right now.

"It'd be so nice to have blackberries here."
she sighed. "They'd certainly liven up breakfast." The meals here were so plain compared to what she was used to at home, and it was always the same stuff. "Did you have any fruit bushes or trees near your house?" she asked.

Hilda’s face fell at Nack’s answer to her question as to whether or not he and Farran had made any progress in removing the damaged brake. She knew better than to think they would have succeeded in removing it by now, but she had dared to at least hope that they had made even a little progress, but then again, it seemed that Nack had been trying to do it on his own, and Farran didn’t seem to have made much headway in his attempts to remove it earlier.

Still, seeing how hopeful Farran was at the sight of the replacement brake gave her a brief moment of hope herself, before she reminded herself that the damaged brake had to come off first, and until then, the replacement wasn’t any good. She let out a sigh of frustration. “I’m sorry I wasn’t able to find a spare crowbar.” she apologized. There should have been one, but maybe the one being used was the spare and a replacement hadn’t come in yet.

But she felt a little better once Farran stepped in to help with a hammer. But it didn’t stop her from pacing around nervously, as she tended to do when she was worried. She supposed there were worse ways to deal with the fear surging through her right then. The fear that Utopia would fall, taking her and her friends and other classmates with it.

And it wouldn’t stop there. If Utopia fell, it was likely that all of Wall Rose would be invaded by Titans in the same way Wall Maria had just a few short years ago. Everyone at home… she stopped herself there, it wasn’t a good idea to follow that train of thought, even in a terrible situation like this. She took a deep breath and wiped her hands on her thighs again. She might not be able to do anything until the tampered brake was off, but she still needed to keep her cool. A cool head was essential in a crisis like this, after all. At least it was for her. She took looks over at the brake to see the progress Nack and Farran were making, but said nothing, as she didn’t want to distract them.

When it came to reading for fun, Hilda preferred to do so with no interruptions or distractions to pull her from the story she was immersed in. But she didn't mind company at all when she was studying. Having someone to study with kept her focused, and of course it always helped to have someone around to discuss the material with.

She looked up from her book at the sound of Mara's voice. "Yeah, I ate them a lot back home." she said with a little smile. "We have blackberry bushes in our backyard. Picking blackberries so my mother could use them in desserts or preserves was one of the few chores I didn't mind doing." Maybe she'd ask her mother to send some blackberry preserves in her next letter, because now she was kind of craving them.

Ah, bunkmate buddies! Awesome! Hmm. What if they were studying from books together and started talking about their homes because something reminds one of them of it? Studying in their dormitory maybe.

Sure, that sounds good!  :)

Wall Rose / Re: Winter Wonderland (Struna)

"I don't know about a dream, but it was a lot of fun, except for the first time, because I kept slipping." Hilda remembered. "I made sure to get in some practice after that." Her own birthdays were more low-key, usually a tea party at home, sometimes outside if the weather was nice enough. Though they weren't as fancy as her cousin's, she liked them anyway.

"After I finish my hot chocolate!" she said, sipping some more at the warm drink in her hands. She didn't want to let such a delicious hot chocolate go to waste, but she didn't want to drink it too quickly, for it was still very warm and she didn't want to burn her mouth. She finished her drink not long after Struna returned from disposing of her own, taking the taller girl's arm and following her to the skate rental stall, disposing of her cup along the way. "I guess so." she said with a wry smile. "Guess we're going to need that now that our drinks are gone!"

There was only two people in front of them, so they didn't have to wait long before they moved up to the front of the line. Hilda told the man at the stand her shoe size and paid the rental fee before he handed her the skates. She went over to a bench nearby and fastened the skates on over her boots while she waited for Struna.

Hey, Senia! With that thread finishing/finished up, do you want to go for some more Hilda and Mara? I was wondering, do you think they'd be bunkmates at all, or just in bunks near one another (or, next to)?

Ideas-wise (and open to your suggestions, of course!):
- We could have them study or work together in an exercise (Mara is MUCH less likely to yell at her for getting slightly distracted or off-plan than Axel was :P)
- Nostalgia bonding: we mentioned them maybe talking about the good things they've left behind in their districts.
- Something purple: maybe a hair tie or a brooch / pendant? Could leave this for after the next thread, when we have things figured out between them, or go for it now, up to you!

Sure! I'm up for them being bunkmates.

I like the idea of studying or nostalgia bonding, and doing something purple in another thread.

Hilda nodded as Nack told her that the man was probably not the one responsible for this mess, but to keep an eye out. She was already thinking the same thing.

She looked over at Farran, fidgeting as she waited for him to tell them more about what needed to be done to fix this, as fixing the gate was the only way anyone in Utopia was going to have even the slightest chance of making it out of this alive.

She tensed a little as Nack mentioned that she was good at mechanics, the thought finally sinking in of how huge a responsibility was ahead of her. The fate of Utopia, and everyone inside lay partially in her hands. She felt in over her head, her heart racing. This was way too big a responsibility for her. But she didn’t really have a choice, did she? Her hands felt clammy again, and with a sigh, she wiped them on her pants. She just had to pretend this was a drill or something. An ordinary assignment for training, not a life-or-death situation. Focus on whatever task was given to her and not think of the impact it might have. She shook her arms out, as if to physically shake off as many doubts and anxieties as she could. Maybe she looked stupid, but it was helping to push those thoughts aside.

She listened carefully to Farran’s instructions. She looked at the brake, doing her best to memorize its appearance. “Twenty-three teeth.” she repeated, to better remember it. “Got it.” she nodded, drawing her blades though she hoped there was no need to use them.

She headed carefully down to the storeroom, feeling like she was doing twenty things at once. Trying her best to keep the image of the brake fresh in her memory while repeating “Twenty-three.” to herself so she wouldn’t forget how many teeth the replacement should have, all while trying to stay on guard for any potential attackers, possibly the person who’d tampered with the gate in the first place.

Though she had soon made it safely to the storeroom, she didn’t feel any safer at all, remaining on her guard as she looked around the place for any hidden intruders before beginning her search for a replacement brake. It felt almost as if someone could jump out at her at any second.

She quickly found a brake that looked a lot like the one she had set out to replace, and counted the teeth, her face falling when it had the wrong number of teeth. With a sigh, she resumed her search until she found another nearby. “Nineteen, twenty, tw-  twenty three!” she smiled, relieved to have found the right replacement. She hurried back up, trying her best to be on guard, though it wasn’t easy when she was trying to get back upstairs as quickly as possible. “I’ve got the brake!” she announced, holding it up. “How’s it going? Making any progress?” She glanced down at the brake to see if they’d made any progress.
