He would quietly answer the cadet as she was reloading "The world today yes, Titans might be the main threat that seems to be endangering humanity, but what about the bandits who ambush travellers outside of towns?   Murderers and killers who stalk their victims until they see their victim is alone.   An assassin's target....  Do you really think your conventional gear will always be with you?   Not everyone in the world will be as kind and polite as you.... Learn from me or learn it from experience. "

After finishing speaking to her he continued working at his own station reloading a bullet in the rifle.   He seemed to have precise coordination when reloading taking him only about half a minute to finish the whole reload.  "Remember, stay calm and collected and don't jump when you fire" He muttered as he rose his rifle aiming. « Last Edit: January 07, 2019, 04:24:41 AM by Voltaire »

"Well... you'd call for the Garrison or the Military Police, wouldn't you?" she frowned. "And hand-to-hand combat can get you somewhere. Would you really... shoot somebody? Or stab them?" The thought terrified her. Being attacked was bad enough, but to almost kill somebody, even in defence, was horrifying. If such things happened, she had to think there was another way than taking somebody's life, or hurting them so badly they might wish for it.

Watching as he reloaded, Mara tried to mimic his actions, but ended up taking even longer. "I'm trying. I am," she murmured. "So... are you going for the Garrison? Or are you more for the Military Police or Survey Corps?"

He paused for a second before answering her question,  "Well if your being attacked and there's no one else to help you, what do you expect to do?  Fighting is essential to life and is second nature to the human condition is it not?" as he talked he aimed his rifle up firing.   The shot hit outside the middle less accurate than before.

He made a small sigh before leaning the rifle on a post.  Turning to her he continued talking "Shoot or stab someone?   Perhaps I have, but does that really matter in the end?  What is past is in the past, right now is now not then.  The future will decide itself.   It doesn't matter where I'm placed, as long as I survive." he silently crossed his arms watching her as the rest of the recruits finished up firing.

"N-no?" she frowned, confused. Was fighting essential? "Survival is... and I suppose some fight for survival, of course, but there must be other ways around as well. Right? We might have to fight to survive sometimes but there should always be more options to choose from." Peace was an option, but she knew that saying such a thing would likely only result in her being laughed at. As silly as it was, well, she would much rather live in a place that put peace above all else.

Mara's eyes widened as she realised that he wasn't answering her question directly. Perhaps I have. "Of course it does! You shouldn't have to, you shouldn't need to do anything like that. None of us should." She lowered the gun, and stepped back slightly from him. "Don't you care about living? Not just surviving. Surviving is, I don't know, the base goal of everybody. But you have to have some other idea of what you'll do with life!"

He silently turned his gaze down to the ground thinking over her words.   The area around them was almost a pure silence as everyone was finished with their shooting and already in the mess hall.   He thought about leaving her in the silence, "I've already said to much" he quietly thought in his head.   Yet he couldn't find an answer to her question even while he thought about it in his head.  "What is it to live?" the young man quietly pondered in his head.

It was almost a whole minute in the silence, as he looked back up at her with the same neutral face he held onto most of the time.    "My only goal in life is to survive... There is no other reason I am here.   Because I held onto that and nothing else I am still alive at this moment.   Holding onto other ideals causes weaknesses of wanting... No... Needing to protect the thing you hold onto.   I only need to protect myself, no matter how selfish I may sound... I speak the truth."

He quietly turned around back to his station and placed the training weapon into its stock and began walking towards the mess hall.  As he passed her he stopped "....Sorry I couldn't help you with your firing skills" he quietly continued his was towards the mess hall.

Mara stared at him. She felt bad for him, terrible and even horrified that that was his way of thinking. It was nearly beyond her comprehension, and she had to stop herself from stepping forwards and hugging him. He didn't seem like the sort who would like that very much. "But weaknesses make us... us," she murmured. "That's not living, if you're not looking for anything but survival." Didn't he have any friends? She wanted to ask, but she thought that would be far too rude.

Packing up, she bit her lip and tried not to bother him any more. His parting comment hurt her. "You helped tons," she called after him, but didn't follow. Maybe he needed some time. Hopefully she could make it up to him sometime though!
