Team Ten: Survey Corps [Spearhead]
« on: November 20, 2019, 04:34:13 PM »
Characters involved (this is not a posting order):

  • Hubert Fraser - 4/4 pairs of blades remaining; 89% gas remaining
  • Levi Ackerman [Squad Leader] - 4/4 pairs of blades remaining; 94% gas remaining
  • Malcolm Watanabe - 4/4 pairs of blades remaining; 90% gas remaining

It has been some hours since the assault on Utopia began.  The day is at its hottest point, with the summer sun beating down on the most northerly settlement of humanity.  Blood congeals on dusty cobblestones as the death toll continues to rise with the temperature.  The outer gate still yawns open, allowing more and more Titans to enter the city, though the disintegrating lead offensive team are working to thin their numbers.  Meanwhile, the inner gate’s mechanism has been successfully repaired, allowing civilians to evacuate behind Wall Rose.

This Survey Corps contingent were summoned by the distress signals and flares that rippled out from Utopia.  It has been a long ride, with the soldiers frequently changing their tired horses for fresh mounts to ensure the swiftest possible journey north.  The details of what disaster awaits them comes from the rumours and witness testimony they pick up along the way, as well as from Erwin’s intel.

With a tide of civilians pushing through the inner gate, the group use their ODM gear to mount the Wall.  From there, they survey the destruction wrought upon the settlement. Commander Erwin has now ordered Captain Levi to lead a team towards the outer gate, to lend support to the lead offensive and the evacuation efforts. The path to the gate is littered with the Titans that have evaded - or consumed - cadets and soldiers alike.

As this is a site-wide plot, the NPC account may occasionally feature in the thread, acting as a checkpoint and controlling non-player characters.

In order to keep the storylines moving forward, the posting orders do not need to be maintained, and participants are instead invited to post whenever time and muse permits. « Last Edit: February 21, 2020, 11:19:53 AM by Puffin »

What an absolute fucking mess.

Once they had ascended the wall, Levi stepped towards the edge, having his gaze sweep over the current situation that was presented in front of them. It was absolute chaos down in Utopia, the faint stream of citizens trying to escape still trickling through the now repaired gate below them. Death and destruction seemed omnipresent and despite the efforts of several different squads, the city was far from being under control.

It had taken Levi and the other members of his temporary squad several hours to make it to the Northern most city and the captain had no idea where the members of his usual squad were - somewhere within the city, probably. Alive, hopefully. He didn’t know what exactly had happened here, didn’t know if anyone really knew what had happened, but judging by Erwin’s messages it wasn’t good. This wasn’t quite like Shinganshina - someone had seemingly disabled both gates. Someone human. Levi struggled to accept what that might mean for them.

With a grim expression, the captain turned back towards the other three. It was time to start what they were here for and get their hands dirty. Time to clear the area of some of those ugly faces. “Our priority for now is clearing the city of as many titans as possible to make evacuation easier and push for the outer gate to get that thing shut. We will move in a horizontal line forward, starting from here. Don’t try to be the hero. Work together if necessary. Try to conserve gas. No unnecessary moves. Be smart. Understood?” Judging by the number of titans and the fact that the outer gate still hadn’t been secured, it would be a tough mission. One that might last a while and resources weren’t aplenty, which only made smart decisions even more essential. “Let's kill some titans.” « Last Edit: November 21, 2019, 03:13:30 AM by Levi Ackerman »

Malcolm stood at attention, shoulders back, hands to his side, he was ready to take orders from his Captain. Which, turned out to be Levi on this very bad day. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that something was very wrong, and it wasn’t just Titans. Yes, Titans were awful, but something was happening in Utopia because of something worse; humans. Gates didn’t just fail. Titans didn’t just appear in this sector in these kinds of numbers. Malcolm knew that, if his ten years in the Survey Corp meant anything.

Malcolm could see the gears turning in Levi’s head. He knew too, and more than likely, their glorious Commander in Erwin Smith knew it. Everyone knew it, but nothing was being said about it, quite yet.

When the Captain was done with his orders, Malcolm was among the first to shout a “Yessir!” in response. Don’t be a hero, eh? It was a ragtag group, not the usual suspects, but dedicated members of the Corps nonetheless. And afterward, Malcolm let a sideways smirk grace his lips, hearing then what their squad leader had to say.

“Let's kill some titans.”

Now that was music to his ears.

Utopia was his home. Had been at least. Hugh had not given it much thought since he joined the Survey Corps and the last of his family that he knew had passed away a decade ago but still...he had been born and lived the first twelve years of his life in Utopia. And now it was lost to the carnage of the Titans.  He sighed and shielded his eyes from the sun with his hand - looking out over the Walls down into the city. What a waste of life. Hugh was not a sentimental man - but he hated waste and useless loss.

Hugh did not stand at attention when the Captain spoke, he kept nearish the edge and watched a Titan amble towards them. He respected and trusted Captain Levi and had no issue with any other of the other soldiers he had been sent out with - but he was very content to work mostly alone if at all possible.

“Let's kill some titans.”

That was their job. More than half his life in the Corps at this point...yeah...Hugh could kill some Titans.  He moved to stand at the very edge of the Wall, his toes hanging over, and set his sights on the same Titan he had been watching before. That one first.

As Kora listened to the Captain’s orders, she stepped forward a bit to get a better look at the city. The path to the outer gate was covered with titans, some of which were already heading their way. The dead littered the streets in various forms, leaving a twisted knot in her stomach. People died there. Her job meant seeing death a lot, but that didn’t mean she got used to it.

“Let’s kill some titans.”

No matter how sickening the sights were, they still had a job to do. It wouldn’t be easy due to the sheer number of titans, and the heat made things even worse. Staying hydrated would be a necessity, and the only water available would be what they had on them. Instinctively, her hand found the canteen on her hip as the thought crossed her mind, and she almost sighed in relief. Just double checking.

She quickly stepped to the edge of the wall with the others, readying herself to move when they do. Her eyes found a rather small titan close to the wall and she chose that one as her first target.

Levi had never been one to keep close tabs on the whereabouts of his team or what exactly they were doing - he trusted them enough to make their own decisions, he had never been the type of leader other military soldiers were. Erwin for example. Erwin knew how to lead, how to convince people what was best for them. But Levi wasn't like that. Letting his subordinates make their own decisions was a philosophy he had adapted early on. Everyone had choices to make. Everyone had to decide what was best for them. And despite this being a fairly random squad, he stood by that philosophy even now. They knew what was to be done, and they knew how to do it. Should anyone be in need of help, they would let him know. He knew them well enough to know they were capable soldiers and he knew it was his job to make sure they got through this as safely as possible.

Takin off, the captain took the far left of their course - the streets littered with titans, sure to keep him busy for a moment there, as he let the rest of his team take on the right side. Civilians were still trying to evacuate - this would be the first priority, to make sure to eliminate the titans closest to the people on the streets, a hasty stream of bodies rushing through the blood stained stone alleys. There was a titan right there in his view, leaning over to reach for a woman, the ugly grin on its face stretching wider the closer its giant hand got - but not so fast. In an instant, Levi secured the hook of his ODM gear into a nearby building and swung by, distracting the titan for long enough to move its attention to him and away from the civilian. The attention only lasted a second, however, as Levi made his way around the back of the titan, using his speed to swing himself up higher and get into a better position before swiftly bringing his swords down in the familiar rotating manner, slicing through the titan’s skin. With a thud, the titan came down, half crushing an abandoned house below it. One down, many more to go.

It was time to go to work.

Levi, squad leader and good old Cap’n Strongest of Humanity himself went up first. Malcolm gave a little bow, saluting with a mock interest. And as he went first, he took down a titan all by his lonesome.

“Tch, showoff.” Malcolm chuckled, standing at the edge of the wall as he shook his head. He turned to his other two squadmates before winking with sparkling red eyes. “Hubie, Pigtails, remember! It ain’t a competition. But! I’d rather make it one anyway!” He tensed, tapping his fingers the triggers of his gear. Then, he back-flipped off the wall for a good measure.

The rush and the wind in his hair, nothing really compared to it. Malcolm wouldn’t deny it, maybe he really was a suicidal thrill-seeker in the end. But, if he really was, at least he told himself he was doing it for a good cause. Killing titans and saving lives? It went hand and hand. It wasn’t bad, not bad at all.

He had already picked his target from when he had jumped from the high. A titan, tall and monster sized as all titans tended to be. He shot his anchor into a rooftop, slinging himself at a reckless angle from his diving jump. He actually was upside down, still, the ground was above him and the smokey sky was rushing below. Well, that would eventually be a problem.

“Try and keep up Cap’n!” Malcolm called out, he swung ahead, flinging himself upright as he landed another anchor on a tower. Ah, there it was. He swung out his swords, reaching out as he sliced deep down on the nape of the neck, firing himself as close he could get to the monster. Malcolm tumbled onto a rooftop afterward, rolling into a precarious one-legged stance at the end of the roof itself, pretending he was going to lose his balance and fall off the edge. Eventually, he swung his body back, landing two feet at the edge and resting his sword on his shoulder.

He winked to Levi again, knowing he’d caught the attention of his Captain, at least for a little. But then Malcolm turned to where the townsfolk were huddled… they’d cleared one street, for now. But titans were still moving and people still needed to escape, it was going to be a long day.

OOC: Thanks for your patience y'all! I enjoyed my break and I'm ready to get back to writing.  :)

Ignoring Malcolm, Hugh sighed to himself, focused on the Titan he had been watching, and when the timing was right - launched himself into the air and with a hard strike - ended the Titan. Landing with a thud on the next roof, Hugh sought out another target. Hugh repeated this a few times - focus on a Titan, wait for the right moment, and strike. He prefered to work alone as much as possible and today was no exception. He kept an eye on the others but made no move to team with any of them. From what he could tell...none of them seemed to need any assistance.

Hugh had a fair number of Titan kills under his belt. Near twenty years in the Corps would give anyone that - so he did not feel accomplished or special. His large frame made him move slower than many others - but he was strong and had decent aim. And...Hugh mused...he was just luckier than many. In the end survival in the Corps was luck.

A fleeing group of people caught his eye and with a grunt, he moved to give them cover -
shouting directions to them. Telling them where to run as he set his sights on yet another Titan.

“Tch…” Levi raised his blades to wipe the blood off of them, greying smoke curling off the sticky liquid. He tried to ignore Malcolm as much as he could, by now used to the other man’s antics and yet - the extravagant moves and manoeuvres were hard to ignore, although they irritated the captain more than they impressed him. Malcolm liked playing around too much, liked to show off his skills and demonstrate his carefree nature and while he was a very capable soldier, Levi had no time for playfulness out in the field. Or anywhere, really. They were there to get rid of titans, not to do stupid tricks, and if he was being honest, it was a true miracle that Malcolm hadn’t been crushed in one of his escapades yet. Hadn’t he just told them to not make any unnecessary moves and conserve gas as much as possible?

Levi’s attention was drawn to Hugh for a second, who seemed to have the situation under control. Much less playfulness, much less talking. Good. He preferred it that way.

As he made his way further along the streets, moving around a titan who was bending down to have his huge, ugly eyes stare into the windows of a half-crushed house, his thoughts wandered back to what had actually happened here, albeit briefly. Erwin was probably working on that mystery just this second, hopefully finding out just who exactly had created this massive chaos - and yet, Levi could not help but be involuntarily unnerved by the feeling that this was far larger than any of them currently dared to think. Immobilizing the titan, he swung around and slashed at his neck, a bit of the blood splattering his cloak. Great. Why could they never keep their filth to themselves?

“Malcolm. Hubert.” he shouted, landing on the rooftop of a neighbouring home. “Take the titans further to the right and work your way forwards, I’ll manage over here.”
