Devotion in Return for Deliverance
« on: January 12, 2020, 08:23:42 PM »

31 in 845, made Minister in Utopia in March 845 | Kind and generous | Moderate zealotry and hidden fanaticism | Compelling speaker | Calm | Manipulative | Delusional | Traumatized

(OOC WARNING: While Siegfried is not schizophrenic per se, he does have auditory hallucinations and is in general a deluded individual with the potential to become more off-kilter. His themes include religious indoctrination.)

Friendships
The problem with Siegfried is that he is likable and, physically, looks harmless. Taking on a new identity following his miraculous return to the Walls means he retains no friends from his cadet days and indeed has no close one besides, but he is much loved by his small but growing flock and those in the wider community would be hard-pressed to find him unlikable. He is calm, and kind, and exhibits great generosity -- he genuinely does care for the wellbeing of others -- and his fanaticism tends to be mild at first glance, even in his public preaching. This is of course a half-conscious strategy: one attracts more flies with honey than with vinegar, after all.

Enemies
However. Like all indoctrinated into the Church, he retains a sense of urgency and zealotry that emerges under emotional duress. Having come from a background where he was fearful and helpless, experiencing his first true tastes of power mean that he is not far from using it for ill-will and in the course of his duties he is beginning to cross paths with those who overtly object to his faith. This has particularly adverse implications for Siegfried since his calling is exceedingly personal -- he believes he personally can hear the 'voice of the Walls' and as such, could be thus persuaded to take more drastic steps to protect their sanctity.

Romance
While romance isn't totally off the cards for Siegfried, it isn't his focus. His delusions and trauma keep him very firmly in his calling. Should anyone or anything be able to break him of this, a redemption arc may be in order and a special person may be what guides that. He is an impressionable sort that needs outside influences to give his life structure and meaning, so whoever would enter his life in such a way has a very broken human being to deal with!

Potential Plots
- He's new in Utopia. Inquiries, friendly or malicious, are welcome!
- Likewise, he's gonna have some run-ins with the Garrison stationed there. Who's out there?
- He was hauled up the Wall in 829 by a Garrison soldier -- who was that merciful individual?
- I welcome more Church of the Walls folks for him to interact with, be they other ministers or part of the civilian flock!
- He's done a good job of starting a new life and leaving his Shiganshina, SC roots as Jaroslaw Booth behind, but what if someone were to recognize him and realize he didn't die out there after all?
- Overall, Siegfried is very open to how his plot will go. Welcome any and all ideas! « Last Edit: January 14, 2020, 10:24:06 PM by Siegfried Justica »

I can offer most of my characters I think.  Since...ya know...Walls...so...Garrison lol.

I don't think he'd have easy access to Pixis - but I could see him meeting Rico, Anka, Arkin, or Miri at some point. Rico and Arkin's teams (and Miri being an Elite) are specialists - but they also handle Wall maintenance and general policing as needed.

Anka is not so much with the populace - but she is always with Pixis and if anyone tries to see him...Anka and Gustav would be the gatekeepers.

I also have Hugh and he's old enough to have been in the SC at the same time. Not sure he would remember/really care about him deserting though.

I think that in general...the Garrison members might see the Church as a pain in the butt lol.

Open to ideas!

(For when you get back, love, no rush! <3 )

I agree, I don't think he'd have easy access to Pixis and nor should he, really, being such new blood! As for the others, maybe the approach would be as more of a coincidental encounter as he tries to flex his preachy muscles or 'the voice of the Walls' tells him to trespass for some reason. Another possibility is him tagging along with a more experienced member of the Church that has more clout and, perhaps, more 'reason' to go there. (As much reason as any non-military personnel have, that is!)

Additionally -- you may have seen -- I've moved his base to Utopia and, of course, this means when all that mess goes down that he'll be there. That could be another potential setting for an encounter (but maybe after the initial chaos, since Garrison folks are gonna be busy with other things! haha). I'm open to ideas too and I have a feeling when I have a firmer grasp of his plot that things will become clearer for how he interacts with the Garrison!

Is there a Church of the Walls Pope lol?

I'm sure Pixis has some dealings with Church higher ups. Most religious leaders have aides/an entourage so it makes sense that Pixis and the Church higher up would not be alone if they were meeting.

Does the Church ever provide humanitarian aid? Ya know when there is some sort of disaster and there are religious organizations handing out clothes, food, etc. That could be something in the aftermath of Utopia. Here a few Churches let people sleep in the sanctuary when the weather gets really bad.

I think it's logical that other areas are going to be sending troops long term to help out in Utopia in the aftermath. So there are going to be plenty of Garrison characters wandering around.

Would the Church ever send ministers to hospitals? Because Anka is going to be in the hospital for a while.

Miri, Arkin, and Rico are the most "boots on the ground" characters so they would be the ones to deal with trespassing.  Very differently lol.

No rush!

Siegfried & Quirin
There's a very particular thing going on in Utopia, one a certain asshole is very much invested in and very much wants the ear of a Minister for... While Farran Falkenrath is working on ways to improve the Walls' defences, Quirin is eager to stop any sort of development in Utopia, whose lower population of titan threats allows for more experimentation. Who's the best faction to appeal to in order to have such experiments delayed? The Church of the Walls, of course! And who better to personally assure the Minister of the threat, to keep him up-to-date, to keep whispering in his ear about all the terrible possibilities that comes with meddling?

Quirin.

Here's the vibe: Quirin wants Ministers on his side. He's going to weasel his way in any way he can - he can do this as a member of the Military Police (which is more public than he'd like, but not entirely suspicious either since he's a guard), and he can pretend to be a devoted follower of the Church and express concerns. Namely, he wants to do both. Primarily, he wants to put Minister Justica in such a position that he does his dirty work for him - protests the Garrison's attempts at trying new defences, disrupts and (Quirin will happily suggest a few rotten names to be hired if needed) sabotages those attempts, and generally gets more people against the movement.

There's a few different possibilities on how we do this and absolutely some ways of exploring this post-Utopia as well because Quirin likes to keep his pets content and subservient.

Siegfried VS Quiet's Garrison Troupe ( ;) )
Quiet you have asked so many wonderful questions that I do not yet know the answer to, but am eager to find out! I need to refresh my memory on how much we actually know, canonically, of how the Church conducts itself and thus how much freedom we may have here in RH, and confer with Puffin and Webs. I don't think it's unreasonable that the Church would attempt to provide humanitarian aid in such a situation, whether it's to save face or as a means to sway others -- I can definitely say that whatever Siegfried's endgame, his impulse to help others in need is at least the genuine article. Once I have more specific answers we may be able to figure something out!

Do you know if it's a local, Utopia hospital that Anka stays in? I imagine she'd go to one there first out of necessity but would she later be moved when it was safe? I can see Siegfried feeling inclined to visit hospitals per the above, particularly if there were already members of his flock there (whether just to visit, last rites, and so on).

Quirin & Siegfried

Y'know, for as much as we've spoken in the last couple or months or so about Quirin it's funny to me that I have yet to thread something that includes him, so this is particularly exciting! I'm all about manipulative pair-ups.

Siegfried will, in all honesty, be a delight for Quirin. Although he's certainly fervent, he is impressionable and easily-manipulated provided the manipulation falls within the lines of reasonability set by his delusions -- I'm sure Quirin is crafty enough to stay within those lines. Siegfried probably wouldn't be able to distinguish, after a while, between Quirin's words and those of 'the voice of the Walls'. Add to this that the existential crisis of Utopia being attacked and him potentially being saved by a Scout will put him in a very vulnerable spot, psychologically. Just need an opportunity for them to meet!

Would it be plausible that one of my Garrison peeps was the one to pull him up? I believe Anka, Rico, and Arkin were all ahead of him in training so they would have been "on duty" when all that went down. I think it stands to reason that they would remember pulling someone up the Wall. Arkin would be the most...chill about it lol.

If you think it plausible, love, then we can certainly do it! This was in the vicinity of Shiganshina  in the latter half of 829 I think but I'm certainly flexible. I know it's a rarity and risky besides, but I'd be happy for any of them to take on that role of savior! (Could also prove interesting later in Utopia, if they run into one another!)

I think it makes sense that fresh cadets get stationed all over the place when they first get out. You only get the assignments you want when you have some years under your belt lol.

Arkin makes the most sense I think. He'd be the most likely to notice and the most likely to take the risk. Because dude is an angel lol.

It would be hard to forget something like that and even if Arkin did not 100% remember Siegfried's face, he would know he knows him from somewhere. It could make for an interesting interaction if they ever meet as older men.

It's all good. No stress and no worries. :-)

Aww I love Arkin and yes it does make sense for it to be him. He is indeed an angel! <3

So in that case, I know you're still on hiatus but when you're back and willing, how do you see us threading these guys? Are we jumping back in time to the incident itself or potentially forward in time to post-Utopia-awfulness with a mini recognition? Or something else entirely?

Arkin is my good boy lol. I think Arkin and Siegfried have a fair amount in common - both wanting to help people and are (on the surface at least) very mild men.

I think I'd like to thread out their meeting. It would be an important moment for both of them (maybe Arkin's first moment of really helping someone on duty) and it's something that Arkin will always remember. I'm sure he wonders what happened to the boy from all those years ago.

A "do I know you?" thread in the aftermath of Utopia would also be nice eventually.

Does not have to happen right away!

Wonderful! I'm looking forward to this! I'm absolutely willing to go at your pace. Would you like to start or shall I? (If I do start, it'll likely draw heavily from the end of this solo post I did not long ago, just as an FYI.) <3

If Siegfried ever does get a redemption arc and depending if both of them are alive at the end of this, I'd like to think that they would make great friends since they're both so mild-mannered and kind at heart, as you say. I like to think of Sieg as my "lost sweet one", haha.

Arkin and Siegfried

I'd be very appreciative if you would start the thread. I think starting from baby Siegfried and all his emotions would give baby Arkin a lot to work from. Arkin is just on the Walls...minding his business...and then something that should not really be happening is happening. This would most likely be Arkin's first "adult" crisis and seeing how he reactions and the why of it will be interesting. Siegfried will be impacting Arkin for decades to come I am sure.

Even though he's on the "wrong" side - it seems that Siegfried is honestly well-intentioned and has probably genuinely helped people along the way. That will always count for something with Arkin.

No rush with starting the thread. No stress and no worries. It's all good.  :) :)

And I will be sure to ref. the solo post. Siegfried was going through it that day lol.
