Petra went red, cheeks puffing up in anger... though hearing this man laugh was nice, she wasn’t sure what his laughter was aimed at. ”You better be laughing a the hawk and not me,” She found herself laughing as she spoke, pointing her stick at him in a threatening yet playful meaner as she yanked up her backpack, not so worried about her tent as she shuffled through the snow towards a possible new spot, ”Or I’ll shove this right up your ass.” She shook her head at him, stealing another glance up at the eagles, still circling, just more disheaved now.

Petra’s puffed out cheeks, quizzical expression and flushed face only served as fuel for the fire of Ian’s amusement.  Laughter racked his body, his abdomen aching and lungs burning, tears filling his grey eyes.  He was eventually forced to stop trudging through the snow as a borderline hysterical sob escaped his lips, and he drew the cold, snow-speckled sleeve of his coat over his face.  The laughter had morphed into coughing, cutting short his amusement.  At least it gave him a chance to speak.

“No - not - not at you,” Ian barely managed to get the words out as he struggled to regain his composure.  Somehow, in this context, even the threat of sodomy - a threat that would normally be answered with a baleful narrowing of his pale eyes - also struck him as comical.  A hoarse chuckle rose in his throat, weaving itself into his next words.  “So you - you can - leave my ass alone.”

Passing by the fire, the heat and sparks likely to serve as a further deterrent to the beruffled eagles, the pair continued on their search for a new camp.  “By the stars…” Ian groaned, pinching the bridge of his prominent nose and turning his steely gaze skyward, trying to regain some composure.  “I reckon you just invented a new goddamn sport…”  Momentarily relinquishing his grasp of his loose ground sheet, the dirty-blond paused and mimed taking a swing with an imaginary bat.  Then he laughed again, this time with a little more self-control.

The ginger crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head, still smiling, laughing softly with Ian as the man temporarily dropped his tent to give his own swinging motion, and she paused in her steps as well to look him over, her smile warm now, face loosing it’s red flush quickly. The cold seemed to help with it too, chill still nipping at her nose. “You have a nice laugh, Ian. I can tell that it’s not something people often hear.” She said softly and nodded off to the side, “Come on then, shake your giggles out and let’s head up the trail away from the birds. We can’t trail away from the checkpoint path, so we’ll just have to scoot up on it, hope we don’t have to go too far to get the eagles off our case.” She gave a long exhale and adjusted her backpack, only taking about ten steps before there was a cracking sound under her foot, and she let out a yelp as she dropped, sliding down steep ground and right into a hole… a large- cave like hole… She wasn’t hurt, luckily, but sliding down a icy dirt slope wasn’t exactly fun. Above her she noticed a large hole, about wide enough for a horse to fall down, and the part she’d broken was the only part of it not covered in ice- simply because there was a hole there now. … It was like a food trap people sometimes built, only not straight down. Perhaps this was some sort of large fox den? The top was a good fifteen feet above her head though… she frowned, hands on her hips, dropping the stick and her backpack. No way could she climb up that...

“Tsk,” Ian tutted reflexively at the compliment, an amused smile still dancing on his lips.  After a pause, he seemed to realise that he was being graceless.  “Thanks,” he murmured, unsure of what else to say, but warmed by his companion’s kindness all the same.

Content with Petra’s plan, Ian nodded his agreement.  Once again grasping the corner of the ground sheet, he lifted it up and began to bundle and fold it haphazardly, his arms filled with canvas.  With his hands occupied, it became that little bit harder to trudge through the snow drifts, his progress slowing.  “I hope the cadets have their eyes on the sky.  I can just imagine - ”  His words were cut short, silenced by an abrupt cracking sound as the ground opened beneath his companion.

The ground sheet immediately tumbled from his arms, Ian lunging instinctively for Petra, intent on pulling her to safety.  His fingertips ghosted tantalisingly over the sleeve of her coat but failed to find purchase; the redhead escaped his grasp and was seemingly swallowed by the earth.  Staggering back from the sudden precipice, Ian dropped to his knees, pushing dirty-blond hair out of his eyes to peer into the pit.  Mercifully, he could see the scout, and she looked largely unharmed.  “You - you didn’t break anything, did you?”
