"I'll keep that in mind.." Shay muttered as a response. He wasn't sure when he'd ever need to know what plants were alright to eat, but he was certain that if he didn't take her up on that offer soon, he'd likely wind up lost in a forest someday. Such was the way he perceived his own streak of bad luck in the world. "Good luck with your equipment, I hope it stays in good shape for you." He added quickly, before beginning to back away, looking down to, and admiring his own equipment, which the two of them had managed to fix up much faster than he would've been able to on his own.

He finally turned his back after he gave her one last slightly awkward wave goodbye, grabbing his coat again, and walking back out of the barracks. He was immediately hit with the freezing, strong winds, causing him to cover up his face quickly. "Damn!" He blurted out, the wind once again biting harshly against his exposed skin.

He recovered quickly, and was able to find his way through the frigid temperature, soon reaching the sleeping quarters for the male cadets, and turning in for the night.

Her words fell on the ears of a decided man. He didn't like showing emotion, that's just how he was, so for him, it wasn't okay to cry, especially not in front of other people. Her sudden, unexpected comforting act caused Shay to freeze up almost immediately, his body stiff as a wooden board. Slowly though, Shay thawed out through the hug, his arms slowly moving up to her back, as another tear came forth from his eye. He didn't have a response to this, at least not a verbal one. Instead, he simply remained still, accepting this for what it was, a kindhearted gesture from one cadet to another.

Shay pulled away finally after he felt the hug had lasted long enough. Wiping away the few loose tears with his sleeve once more. "Thanks..." The redhead muttered, sniffing lightly. "Nobody ever seems to care about anyone's problems but their own. You're not like a lot of those other cadets." He added, grabbing his ODM gear off the table. "You're one of the good ones, I hope a titan doesn't eat you." It was practically the closest thing to a compliment Shay had given someone since the day he joined up with the Cadet Corps.

"If you ever need help with something, you can ask me." Shay mumbled, avoiding eye contact with her as per usual, as he tucked the ODM away behind his back.

Shay finally looked up from the table to meet her eyes, his mouth turned down ever so slightly into a frown. "Right...." Once again, Shay went silent for a few moments, his hands crossed over one another in his lap as he internally contemplated her words. It gave him a melancholic feeling inside as she spoke of her father, and how he seemed... disappointed with her? Shay would do almost anything to have his father back, even if his father held nothing but fury and contempt for the boy. "Sorry to hear that." He muttered in response to her opening up a little about her own family life.

"Y'know.. when we graduate... you should go see your dad. Try to smooth things over. I didn't have a rocky relationship with my parents, but I.... I didn't get to say goodbye. I didn't know the last time I spoke to them would be the LAST time. I wouldn't advise you to push your luck on such a thing." For the life of him, Shay still didn't know why he was speaking so much to Sylvia. He hadn't talked this much in years. Shay realized then that a lone tear was, very slowly, streaming down his right cheek. He overreacted to this, furiously wiping it away with the sleeve of his coat, before looking to the ground once again, face burning as his cheeks turned red with embarrassment.

There it was. Shay knew it was coming sooner or later, as it always did. Anyone who openly claimed they were interested in the Scouts was going to be asked 'Why' eventually. He stayed quiet for a moment, staring blankly at the wooden table before them. Eventually he spoke up, but not on the matter of joining the Scouts. "I can clean it myself.." He muttered, holding the bleeding digit within the small cloth.

Shay stood up from the table and walked away for a few moments to address his wound, leaving Sylvia behind to work on the gas canister. The cut was small enough that he only required a small patch the piece the little injury away. He returned to the table, slowly taking back his seat with the female cadet. "I want to go home." He said, his voice shaky, and low, but not yet a whisper. "It's been so long... It was so sudden. They forced us out of the house, we didn't even get to take anything with us." It was the first time Shay had told anybody about his history, even if it wasn't in the clearest wording. He wasn't sure why he was telling her though, they didn't even really know each other. Maybe he was just tired of keeping everything balled up inside.

Shay was content to work in silence for a while, having always preferred to converse inwardly with his own thoughts than with those around him on the outside anyhow. Her comment about having plenty of parts seemed out of the blue, but.. maybe that was just how to make small talk with someone you don't know very well?

"Yeah... makes repairs easier.." Shay mumbled awkwardly. He went about quietly fixing up the blade place-holders on the scabbard and refitting the metal loops on his harness, before finally thinking of something else to say to her. "So... what regiment are you planning on joining?" He finally asked.

"Personally, I'm aiming for the scouts." He added, just to give Sylvia a better picture of where he was coming from. In truth, though, he couldn't really explain his reasoning behind wanting to join the scouts, as any number of bad things could happen if he did so. She might call him insane and report him to the officers, the MP's could come after him, or maybe she'd believe him and go around telling people. No matter which way the scenario was spun, elaborating on his choice seemed at the least, unwise.

As he looked to her, awaiting a response, he nicked his finger with a screw as he was finishing up with attaching the scabbard to the ODM gear. He didn't make a fuss, and even went so far as to try and hide the injury from Sylvia's sight, wrapping his thumb in a small cloth as his hand slowly descended below the table.

Shay had begun fixing his gear by first pulling apart the right-side scabbard and gas canister, which had all but turned to gears and springs from his crash. Luckily enough, there were pre-made replacements for these, the difficult part would be configuring them to his harness. Then, he found his silence somehow interrupted by an inquiry from the girl who shared the room with him. Looking up and over, Shay realized that indeed, this female cadet was talking directly to him.

"Oh.. accident. One of my cables wrapped around a tree branch... then i did too." He didn't intend for his very brief retelling of events to come off as a joke, but realized that it must've sounded like one to the girl he was answering.

Her accent sounded slightly different to some of the others, he figured she was a former resident of the interior, since she sounded similar in tone to a few of the cadets he knew had resided there. "I...." He let out a sigh, before nodding his head slowly. "Yes, if you want to be helpful I guess I won't turn you away." Unsurprisingly to anyone who knew Shay's personality in any capacity, he didn't actually sound very grateful, though on the inside he was. He'd felt sorely embarrassed that afternoon when he'd wrecked in front of a dozen or so other cadets, so to have someone there to help him wouldn't allow him time to stir up any negative thoughts, instead forcing him to work on his far-from-amicable social skills.

"I guess you could work on getting the gas canister in working order while I get the the scabbard fitted." He said, avoiding eye contact as he immediately set about on his task, not even giving her a chance to accept or object. After only a half of a moment or so, he realized they'd need to know each other's names for communications sake, so he spoke up one more time and simply said, "I'm Shay."

The wind bit against Shay's face as he trekked the outdoor paths. He was on his way to the training barracks, his ODM gear in dire need of a repair. Earlier in the day he'd crashed and burned during an accident, and subsequently damaged a good portion of the equipment. Shay finally reached the door, reaching forward and finding himself with a grip on the door handle, finally. He opened it and left behind the shrieking wind and painful cold.

The interior was warm, comforting, and well lit. After a quick scan of the room, he noticed only one girl had likewise taken refuge within these barracks. He didn't recognize her immediately, but eventually realized he had seen her around before, though he couldn't exactly place her name immediately.

He began to make his way over to some of the spare pieces of equipment used for repair, but stopped when he heard her mutter something. 'They have no idea?' The words just barely managed to reach Shay's ears. What was that supposed to mean, and more importantly, who were they? Shay only mused on these thoughts for a brief moment, but realized that it ultimately didn't really matter to him. He finished the short walk to get what he needed, before taking a seat at one of the tables adjacent to the other girl.

He only looked to her for a moment longer, pondering if she was here alone for some reason other than just equipment repairs. Shay himself didn't have hardly any friends besides Kaien, and even still he preferred to spend most of his time alone. After shaking the thought from his head, he averted his eyes from her, and set about repairing his badly damaged gear.

Wall Rose / Re: Nothing Burns Like the Cold
« on: October 18, 2019, 01:05:13 AM »
Shay awoke from his slumber with the sunrise in his eyes, causing him to blink multiple times and turn on to his side. He groaned and stepped down from the bunk, having a brief look around at the other cadets he was sharing the cabin with. Unlike him, they all seemed to be very tired, as if they hadn’t gotten a lick of sleep throughout the night.

The redhead dressed in the very warm clothes he’d packed, and got entirely prepared, having a few minutes to spare while he waited for the signal. He continued to observe the others as they got prepared, and finally escaped the confines of the small, barely habitable cabin.

The sound of the snow and ice helped keep Shay calm and collected, reserving to silence while the other two members of his group began to converse. He kept his eyes peeled, aware of the dangerous predators that lurked about in the area. Shay had been through too much to be mailed to death by a pack of wolves, or a raging bear.

After the girl finished speaking, Shay decided to chime in on the conversation. "She’s right. Pessimism is just realism and laziness blended. As long as we stay on guard we’re fine. I’m sure I can outrun you anyway.” He made the sinister joke at her expense, a very small smirk crawling onto his lips.

He reached around his back to adjust the rifle slung over his shoulder. "Only joking. Though I could" Shay clarified, picking up the pace and walking in stride with his cohorts.
